    The first year of the Texas Education Agency'stakeover of Houston ISDhas been mired in protests, walkouts and outcry due to staff turnover, controversial systemic reforms and more. The Chroniclepublished a surveyon May 16 asking Houston ISD parents, teachers and community members about their thoughts on the state takeover as the district wraps up its first year under TEA control.In one question, the Chronicle asked if the respondents' view of the district has improved, stayed the same or worsened in the last year. As of May 31, over 550 people have responded to the callout; 13 respondents said their view stayed the same, 11 said their view has improved and 528 respondents said their view of HISD has worsened.Here's a look at responses to the survey.

    State Sen. Molly Cook narrowly defeated state Rep. Jarvis Johnson as the two faced off for the second time this month inthe race to securethe Texas Senate seat previously held byMayor John Whitmire. Cook triumphed over Johnson again, 50.2% to 49.8%,during the primary runoff. With 18,782 votes cast in the low-turnout election, Cook prevailed by 74 votes. She will now face businessman JosephTrahan, the sole Republican to enter the race, in November.
